Gyeongju – Ancient Silla Capital
Gyeongju is a popular tourist spot for both Koreans and foreign visitors alike. Located in the south east of Korea, Gyeongju was the capital city of the ancient kingdom of Silla which ruled around two thirds of the Korean peninsula at the height of its power. As such, Gyeongju is home to many historical sites.

Cheomseongdae Observatory
Cheomseongdae Observatory is perhaps the most famous site in all of Gyeongju. This stone structure is the oldest astronomical observatory in Asia, and perhaps the entire world. It was built in the 7th century in the kingdom of Silla. Though you cannot get close to the tower in order to preserve it, you will see many people gathered around it for photos as Cheomseongdae Observatory is such a recognisable icon of Gyeongju.
In the area surrounding the observatory you can also find other points of interest and historical sites. Nearby there is a large flower meadow that blooms in spring, while in autumn you’ll be able to see the famous pink muhly grass.
Also close to the observatory is Gyerim Forest, a small peaceful wooded area away from the crowds. From within you’ll be able to see some of the many ancient tomb mounds that can be found throughout Gyeongju.
Woljeonggyo Bridge
Woljeonggyo Bridge was originally constructed during the Silla period, before it was burned down in the Joseon dynasty. It was rebuilt this century and is now the largest wooden bridge in Korea. You can cross the bridge and walk along the river on either side. There are some stone steps crossing the river which provide a good spot to take photos of the bridge.
Gyochon Traditional Village
Gyochon Traditional Village is located between Cheomseongdae Observatory and Woljeonggyo Bridge. Here you can see many traditional buildings of Korea, as well as enjoy cafes and restaurants located in unique buildings from Korea’s past. I recommend stopping at Eyst 1779 nearby Woljeonggyo Bridge, a cafe that sells delicious ice cream bars.
Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond
Donggung Palace and Wollji Pond form part of what was the palace complex of the kingdom of Silla. This area is small but pleasant to walk around. You can see the main pavilion of the palace which appears to extend into the artificial pond, and you can walk around the entire pond and gardens. The palace is open during the day and at night, so you can also visit later to see the area lit up with the pavilion reflected in the pond.
Royal Tombs
As previously mentioned, ancient tomb mounds can be found throughout Gyeongju. These tombs appear like small hills rising steeply from the ground. Some of the most famous tombs include the Royal Tomb of King Michu, Hwangnamdaechong Tomb, and the Tombs of Noseo-ri. You are able to walk around a lot of the tombs in Gyeongju freely, but stepping on or attempting to climb them is prohibited.
Hwangnidan-gil
Hwangnidan-gil, or Hwangnidan Street, is a popular area in Gyeongju. It is home to a variety of unique shops, restaurants, cafes and photo studios, many of which are in traditional hanok buildings. This is a good location to buy souvenirs, try some of the local cuisine, or take photos wearing the traditional hanbok clothing of Korea.
Jungdo Tower
Further east in Gyeongju is Jungdo Tower, a nine storey pagoda located by the river that flows into Bomun Lake. Although there is not much to see at the tower, it is an impressive structure. Around here and the nearby lake is also a good place to see the cherry blossoms in spring.
Gyeongju Expo park
On the east side of Gyeongju and located to the south of Bomun Lake is the Gyeongju Expo Park. This park hosts various exhibits showcasing art, culture and the history of the city. The park centres around the impressive Gyeongju Tower which has a large cut-out in the shape of a pagoda. You can head to the top for views over the park and the city.
Within the park there are gardens to walk through and sculptures on display. There is a light media exhibit and also a small dinosaur museum that will be good for children.
