Suncheon – Where Nature Meets History
Suncheon is the largest city in Jeollanam-do, or South Jeolla Province. For those looking to escape the more “mainstream” Korean cities like Seoul and Busan, Suncheon is a good choice. It’s also worth combining with a trip to the city of Yeosu which is only around 20 minutes away by train.
Things to do in suncheon
Suncheon Bay
Suncheon Bay is what Suncheon is famous for. This coastal wetland is a great place to enjoy nature while on a trip to the city. One of the highlights of the bay area is the reed field where the long stalks blow in the wind. I visited at the beginning of March and although cold, the reeds were still present making it a viable year round location to visit.
Following the path around the wetland area will bring you to a small bridge followed by a short climb uphill. This leads to the Yongsan Observatory where you can get a great view over the bay area.
Suncheon Bay is also a great environment for wildlife, and while here you will see many birds flying about.
Naganeupseong Folk village
To the west of Suncheon is the Naganeupseong Folk Village. This fortress village was built in 1397 during the Joseon dynasty to defend the area against Japanese pirates. Much of the village has been preserved in its original condition, and people still live there to this day. Many of the houses have thatched roofs in the style of South Jeolla architecture of the Joseon period.
After purchasing a ticket you’ll head through the main fortress gate, then you are free to explore the village inside. You can walk all around the fortress walls and through all the streets of the village.
When I was there I saw a local blacksmith crafting knives, and there are also local crafts shops selling goods.
The restaurants inside the village sell simple yet delicious food. I had the best kimchi at the restaurant in Naganeupseong.
