Yeosu – History by the sea
Yeosu is located on the southern coast of Korea at about the midway point. It is one of my favourite cities in South Korea because it has a very different feel to it compared to many of Korea’s bigger cities like Seoul, Busan and Daegu. A trip to Yeosu is worth combining with a trip to the city of Suncheon which is only around 20 minutes away by train.
Things to do in yeosu
Odongdo
Odongdo, or Odong Island, is connected to the mainland by the Ondondo breakwater. On the mainland side of the breakwater there is a small market. You can cross the breakwater on foot, bicycle or by noddy train.
The island is nature’s paradise, with many paths branching between the tall trees and a few highlights worth seeing. Among these is Dragon Cave, a large opening down by the sea where legend says a dragon lives. There is also Odongdo Lighthouse and many scenic cliffs surrounded by the blue waters of Yeosu.
You can spend about half a day exploring the island.
Yeosu Export centre and port
If you take the train to Yeosu you will likely arrive at Yeosu Expo Station, the final stop on the line. Exiting the station will bring you to the Yeosu Expo Centre, where you can see some art installations and the convention centre where the World Expo was held in 2012.
Walking round the coast you can’t miss the Big O, a large circular structure poking out the water. At night you can see a water and light show here.
Continuing around the coast you’ll reach the port and an area with many hotels and cafes. This part of Yeosu reminded me of being at the Mediterranean coast of southern Europe. It’s a pleasant area to walk around on a sunny day.
Yi Sun-Sin Square
Yi Sun-Sin was a Korean admiral during the Imjin War against Japan in the 1500s. His naval headquarters were based in Yeosu. In his most famous battle he successfully led 13 Korean ships against a Japanese fleet of over 130 ships, and as such is one of Korea’s most well-known historical figures. He is credited with designing an improved version of the turtle ship.
At Yi Sun-Sin Square you will find a large statue of the admiral, while opposite that is a replica of a turtle ship which you can enter. Off from the square there are many little streets with various shops selling souvenirs, clothes and sweet treats.
